Building a 1-bit Web

The desktop you are looking at is a single React island inside an Astro site. Every blog post is a static page. The window manager only wakes up on the client.

Pixels, not points

The fonts are bitmap recreations of Chicago 12 and Geneva 9 drawn on a sixteen pixel grid. Rendered at sixteen pixels they map one to one onto the original screen pixels. Magnification is applied with the CSS zoom property so every line, border and dither tile stays on the integer grid.

Why System 6 and not 7

System 7 introduced colour. Once colour is allowed, the constraint that makes this interesting disappears. Two colours force every design decision to be about shape and pattern.
